Radioactive Iodine (I-131) Therapy For Feline Hyperthyroidism
I-131 therapy is considered the gold standard for treatment of hyperthyroidism, offering a safe and permanent solution with a single injection.
Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common endocrine diseases in older cats. If left untreated, it can lead to weight loss, heart disease, high blood pressure, significant interference with overall quality of life and an ultimate decline in health. I-131 therapy is considered the gold standard for treatment of hyperthyroidism, offering a safe and permanent solution with a single injection.
What is I-131 therapy?
I-131 is a treatment that utilizes a small dose of radioactive iodine via a single injection that selectively destroys overactive thyroid tissue. The thyroid gland naturally absorbs iodine, so the radioactive form travels to the abnormal cells that are responsible for producing excessive thyroid hormone. Only the hyperactive cells are targeted and healthy tissue is preserved. No anesthesia or surgery is required and the success rate is 95-98%! Most cats require just one treatment and this is considered a clinical cure!

What are the benefits of I-131 therapy?
Radioactive iodine therapy, as mentioned above, is a permanent cure for most cats with hyperthyroidism. No daily medication is required in the long term to control this disease process. The alternative approach to treating hyperthyroidism in cats is twice-daily medication for life, with frequent blood monitoring for thyroid hormone levels and medication dose adjustments. The primary medication used to control hyperthyroidism can cause side effects, some of which may be severe. The stress of administering life-long medication is eliminated, helping to restore the trust and affection between you and your pet. This treatment is safe and well-tolerated, even in senior cats, and restores normal thyroid function, leading to improved weight, appetite, energy levels and excellent quality of life.
Is my cat a candidate?
Most cats with confirmed hyperthyroidism are excellent candidates for I-131 treatment. However, your primary veterinarian or our internal medicine department will recommend diagnostic testing to establish the diagnosis and ensure your cat is otherwise healthy enough to undergo this treatment process. This treatment option can be pursued whether your cat is newly diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or has been on treatment for years. It is an excellent option for pets that have had side effects to traditional medical therapy or cannot tolerate the stress of daily medication. Our specialists will collaborate with your primary veterinarian to help determine your cat’s eligibility for this treatment option.
